Check this out. Explains side chain compression pretty well - it's when you make your kick sound fat by making everything else drop in volume whenever it plays: blog.landr.com/finally-learned-mix-kick-bass/By default, all audio in the side chain track will compress the audio in the track you have the compressor in. But if you press the EQ button next 'Sidechain' on the compressor, it activates a filter which will only let some frequencies activate the compressor. So if you've got hi hats and a kick in your sample and you only want the side chain compressor to 'turn on' when the kick plays you can use a filter so that only the lower frequencies cause the side chaining effect.

yeah this is a great article, really breaks it down well !
in this four tet video amongst other sick shit that is there, he speaks about using sidechaining also as a way to introduce a beat into the track very subtly before the main beat kicks in !
i'll just put it here as well again anyway:
